Text Messaging to Help Patients with HIV take Medications and Reduce Drug Use

Another area of research is HIV treatment adherence.  In this area, we completed an NIH funded project, Treatment Extension by Text (R34 DA031640) testing a text messaging/ecological momentary assessment and intervention tool for HIV+ rural drug users.  In this project, we determined the feasibility, acceptability, and promise of this mobile phone tool to gather real-time data on HIV medication adherence, and to intervene with personalized messages. Bidirectional texting helped patients take their medications as prescribed.

In a new project, we are developing an Internet intervention featuring fun and interactive learning tools and peer testimonial videos to help people living with HIV optimize their lives. That project is funded by NIH/NIDA and promises to be our best intervention yet!
